Farmdog and First Descents
At Farmdog Surf School, we’re proud to support First Descents, a nonprofit that provides outdoor adventure programs — including surfing — for young adults affected by cancer and other serious health conditions.
About First Descents
First Descents offers free, week-long experiences where participants connect through activities like kayaking, climbing, and surfing. These programs are designed to help people rebuild confidence, find community, and process what they’ve been through — all in an environment that’s supportive, low-pressure, and outdoors.
It’s not therapy in the traditional sense — but for many participants, it’s a powerful step in their recovery, both physically and emotionally.
Our Role
When First Descents brings their surf programs to the Outer Banks, Farmdog provides instructors, equipment, and a safe space to learn. Many participants have never surfed before, and for some, it’s their first time doing any kind of physical activity since treatment.
Our goal isn’t to turn anyone into a pro surfer — it’s to help people feel capable again, even if it’s just standing up on a board for the first time

Why It Matters
We’ve seen the impact this program has. People arrive quiet, unsure, sometimes still in recovery. By the end of the week, they’ve not only tried something new — they’ve formed strong connections with others going through similar things.
We don’t take that lightly. It’s a privilege to be a small part of something that makes a lasting difference.
